Kisii: Joy as mother leaves prison to take her son to university

It was songs and dance for a family in Kisii after a woman who had been incarcerated at the Kisii Prisons was released and rejoined with her family.

Zipporah Moraa, who hails from Marani sub-county, was jailed after losing money belonging to fellow traders, leaving behind her son who had performed well and set to join Kenyatta University.

In a case brought to the limelight by a local channel, Bosongo Vibes, Joseph Ndubi, had scored an A from Alliance High School, and was set to join KU, when his mother was arrested and sent to jail.

Depressed, Ndubi went to his grandparents' home and locked himself in one of the rooms. He could not speak to anyone as his dreams seemed to hit a dead end.

Well-wishers came to the young man's rescue and raised the required money to get his mother out of jail.

"I want to thank everyone who came to my help. It was a big shame when I was taken to prison and my son's life was losing direction. But God has touched all of you to raise money for my son's education and to get me out of prison," a teary Moraa told Bosongo Vibes.

Moraa, a maize trade in Kisii had collected close to Ksh.300,000 from fellow traders to get them maize from Kehancha in Migori county.

But on her way back, she lost Ksh.175,000 of the total money, prompting the traders to file a case against her.

The case dragged on for over a year, after which the court ordered Moraa to reimburse the KSh175,000 to the rightful owners, or serve 2 years in jail.

Since she couldn't raise the money, Moraa was taken to jail. She had stayed in jail for over a month when well-wishers raised the required amount.

The money was deposited at the Nyamira Law Court accounts office and the process of releasing her was expedited.

"I'm happy that my mum is now here and she will be able to see me join university. I want to study medicine. Thank you to everyone who stood by us and make my dreams come true," Ndubi said.

Among those who took up the matter when it was highlighted was Kitutu Chache North MP Japheth Nyakundi.
