Kirinyaga: Missing 53-year-old man discovered dead in open well

David Mwangi's family discovered him in a 15-foot well used for farming after he went missing around 1 p.m. on Monday.

Tragedy has struck Kandongu village in Mutithi Ward, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, where a missing 53-year-old man was discovered dead in a well on his property.

David Mwangi's family discovered him in a 15-foot well used for farming after he went missing around 1 p.m. on Monday.

His brother, Harrison Nyaga, expressed the family's grief, stating that they had been searching for him since his wife reported him missing.

"We were shocked to find his lifeless body in the well. We had been looking for him since his wife informed us he was nowhere to be found," Nyaga said.

Local resident William Kamocere, who arrived at the scene shortly after an alarm was raised, explained that Mwangi's body was discovered by a villager who had gone to fetch water early in the morning.

"The person who saw David Mwangi’s body immediately called his wife, who began crying and raised the alarm, drawing the attention of neighbors," Kamocere recounted.

Acting Mutithi Chief, Felistas Gitau, confirmed the incident, stating she was informed by the village head shortly after the discovery.

Esther Muthoni, another resident, noted that wells in the area are commonly used for farming, but many are left uncovered.

"We use these wells to farm horticultural crops, but unfortunately, they are often left open. We need to be more cautious," she urged.

The body was retrieved by local residents and police officers from Kiamaciri Police Station and has been taken to Kibugi Funeral Home for a postmortem examination.
