Kenya's Jean Njeri Kamau appointed UN resident coordinator in Guyana

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Kenya’s Jean Njeri Kamau as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Guyana starting September 15, 2024. 

Njeri’s appointment follows Kenya’s approval for the diplomat to take the position of the highest-ranking representative of the UN Development System in the South American country that held the Security Council presidency in February 2024. 

With 20 years of experience in human rights, development, political governance, and institutional development, Njeri recently served as Kenya’s Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union. 

She has also served as a diplomat in South Africa, Kingdom of Eswatini and Kingdom of Lesotho and Washington DC.

Njeri was the first first Executive Director for the Federation of Women Lawyers, Kenya and has held roles in the public sector and civil society. 

In addition, the Secretary-General also appointed Rita Columbia of the United States as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in North Macedonia. 

Recently, Guterres also appointed Retno L.P. Marsudi of Indonesia as his Special Envoy on Water.
