Kenyans have streamed into Nairobi National Park to celebrate Jamhuri Day, following Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua's announcement on free entry.

In an announcement at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) headquarters on Friday, Mutua said the move was to mark Kenya's 60th Jamhuri Day.

On Tuesday, hundreds of Nairobians were seen flocking to the Nairobi National park through various entries.

Heavy traffic has also been witnessed at the entrance of Lake Nakuru National Park, and other KWS facilities across the country.

Mutua had announced the government’s free invitation would be extended to Kenyans who produce proof of their citizenship status at entry points.

Kenyan children will enjoy free entry only if they are accompanied by adult Kenyan parents or guardians.

The free entrance extends to all marine parks, the Nairobi Safari Walk, and animal orphanages, valid from 6.00 am to 6.00 pm on 12th December.

When he made the announcement on Friday, December 8, Mutua called on  Governors of County Governments that manage national reserves to also consider extending a similar waiver to Kenyan citizens.

Kenyans have been asked to exercise patience when visiting the facilities, following the directives of the KWS staff.

For safety concerns and the high visitation expected, people will access the facilities in turn.
