During the ceremony attended by five delegates from the 40 wards of Kitui County, Kilonzo, who is also the former MP for Mutitu (now renamed Kitui East) said he will contest the seat through the Wiper Party.
Kiema told delegates that Kitui county leadership needs a radical, transformative leader like him to fix what he terms as a five-year hiatus in the county under the current leadership.
“The governor whom they elected and the government are not fulfilling the needs of residents. They have been lamenting about water scarcity which forces them to walk up to 30 kilometres in some places in search of water,” said Kilonzo.
The launch was attended by Mwingi North MP Paul Musyimi, East Africa legislative council MP Kennedy Kalonzo and former Kilome MP Mutinda Mutiso, among others.
Describing himself as a tried-and-tested leader, Kilonzo said he was suitable to lead Kitui County as the Chief Executive Officer.
“I am renowned and very experienced as a parliamentarian, after which the President appointed me as the first Kenyan ambassador to Turkey. I have networked and gathered skills and experiences which I will use to serve Kitui people,” he stated.
Kilonzo further asked people who would wish to participate in the Wiper Party nominations to register as Wiper Members saying only party members would be allowed to participate in the primaries, as opposed to universal suffrage.
He hopes to oust Governor Charity Ngilu who will be seeking a second term.
