Kenya-US finalising trade agreement to spur economic growth – Ruto
In a post on X, Ruto emphasized that the partnership would be pivotal in promoting trade and investment.
"The relations between Kenya and United States are focused on the expansion of our shared prosperity. We are expediting the finalisation of a Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership (STIP) agreement, which will anchor increased trade, boost manufacturing, create jobs and spur investment between our nations," Ruto affirmed after a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday.
President Ruto's statement highlighted key areas of mutual interest, essential for achieving substantial economic outcomes.
"We are particularly enthusiastic about collaborating in infrastructure development, renewable energy projects, sustainable manufacturing, and empowering Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), a key engine in our economic growth," he added.
Furthermore, Ruto emphasized that Kenya and the US would maintain their commitment to addressing regional security concerns and conflict resolution.
"We will continue to engage on regional security, conflict resolution and the fight against terrorism to ensure the Horn of Africa has the room to focus on social and economic advancement," he remarked.
The trade agreement, was launched during the initial negotiation round of the STIP in Nairobi on April 2023.
This signified the commitment of both Governments to promote inclusive economic growth, benefiting workers, consumers, and businesses, including Micro-, Small-, and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), and supporting regional economic integration in Africa.
Subsequently, in July 2023, United States Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai traveled to Nairobi for discussions with President Ruto and senior Kenyan officials. The discussions focused on maintaining momentum and progressing negotiations related to the STIP.
The talks advanced across nine crucial areas including; agriculture, anti-corruption measures, digital trade, environmental sustainability, climate change action, and workers' rights and protections.
Negotiations led by Assistant United States Trade Representative Constance Hamilton and representatives from various government agencies, are currently underway.
This second in-person round of STIP negotiations is set to take place in Washington, D.C. between October 4-7, 2023.
