The Kenyan Marine Commando Unit (KMCU) has
taken part in a training activity delivered by the United Kingdom’s (UK) Royal
Marines.
According to the British High Commission in
Nairobi, this was part of a visit by the HMS Lancaster, a British Royal Navy
Frigate which is a type of naval ship.
KMCU took part in several training
activities and practical demonstrations, among them visit, board, search, and
seizure exercises – tactics frequently used to counter piracy, terrorism, and
smuggling.
Creation of the KMCU is a 5-year
partnership between the UK and Kenya to enable the Kenyan Navy to run
self-sufficiently and train their commandos.
“It’s fantastic to see that the UK and
Kenya have taken advantage of this opportunity to add serious value to the
Kenyan Marines training program – a great example of how our security
partnership is making a real difference to Kenya’s military capacity and
capability,” said Neil Wigan, the British High Commissioner to Kenya.
“HMS Lancaster’s visit to Kenya is a
fantastic opportunity for Lancaster’s Royal Marines to train and exercise
boarding operations with the Kenyan Marine Commando Unit, contributing to the
UK and Kenya’s joint commitment to improve regional stability and security,” added
Commander Chris Sharp Royal Navy, Commanding Officer HMS Lancaster (Port).
HMS Lancaster, which is equipped with
various weaponry and sensors, paid a visit to the Port of Mombasa.
The vessel also took part in various activities
such as conducting drug busts and completing security serials.
