Kenya and Italy have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) seeking the two nations' collaboration in the healthcare sector.

The MOU was borne off a sitting between Kenya's Principal Secretary in the State Department for Public Health & Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni and Italy's Deputy Ambassador to Kenya Lorenza Gambacorta on Thursday.

“This meeting marks a significant follow-up to the MoU signed by Presidents William Ruto and Sergio Mattarela of Italy during the latter’s visit to Kenya in March,” PS Muthoni said on X – formerly Twitter – shortly after the meeting.

One of the central pillars of the MoU is the promotion of local pharmaceutical manufacturing; Kenya has long grappled with the challenge of ensuring a consistent supply of essential medicines, often relying on imports.

The MOU is set to change the landscape by encouraging the establishment and growth of pharmaceutical manufacturing within Kenya's borders.

Furthermore, the collaboration between Kenya and Italy will encompass knowledge exchange in specialized healthcare areas through comprehensive training programs.

The initiative is also expected to empower healthcare professionals with advanced skills, further bolstering the nation's healthcare capabilities by equipping its healthcare workforce with the latest knowledge and techniques.

Kenya and Italy have committed to working together to strengthen global health security and disease control.

Supported by the National Public Health Institute (NPHI), this collaboration signifies a proactive approach to addressing global health challenges by pooling their resources and expertise, positioning both nations to respond swiftly and effectively to health crises that may arise on the international stage.

Moreover, a regional healthcare hub is set to provide specialized mental healthcare services and support programs related to reproductive and maternal health.

This is seen as a significant step toward addressing critical healthcare needs and improving the overall health and well-being of the population.

Kenya and Italy's specialized health and research institutions will also engage in collaborative efforts pertaining to research, training, and healthcare services.

“This not only promises to advance medical knowledge but also positions both countries as leaders in healthcare innovation," the PS added.

“These joint initiatives signal a promising future for Kenya and Italy, underlining the importance of international collaboration in advancing healthcare and achieving health coverage.”
