Kenya is fast-tracking the operationalisation of a Regional Centre of Competence for Digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Skilling in the Public Service, a move aimed at strengthening the government's digital capabilities and positioning the country as a regional leader in emerging technologies. The Centre, hosted at the Kenya School of Government and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is expected to become a strategic hub for building digital and AI competencies across the public sector.

It is designed to enhance the government's capacity to deliver citizen-centric services and respond to the evolving demands of a digital economy. This development was the focus of a meeting held on Friday between the Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui, and the Principal Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development, Dr. Jane Kere Imbunya.

The two leaders discussed the modalities for establishing and activating the Centre and emphasised the urgency of implementing the required operational frameworks. They also explored the Centre’s potential to support Kenya’s digital diplomacy efforts by fostering innovation and promoting regional and international cooperation in the field of emerging technologies. Both Principal Secretaries agreed on the need to fast-track the Centre’s launch and ensure it begins delivering tangible benefits across the public service.
