The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has dispatched excavators to dig trenches along Nairobi’s Mombasa Road and Uhuru Highway in an effort to combat the flooding witnessed over the weekend.

“In light of recent floods along Uhuru Highway and Mombasa Road (A8), the Nairobi Expressway project team has dispatched excavators to open up the drainage and dredging in the affected sections,” stated KeNHA on Sunday evening.

On Sunday morning, traffic flow on the busy highway was marred by floods due to poor drainage along the roads.

In videos and photos shared by travellers, vehicles were seen wading through deep waters against the tides.

A photo taken near City Cabanas showed a saloon car stuck in an un-cordoned roadside trench, with water fully covering its bonnet.

“The flooded areas are also being barricaded to enhance safety,” KeNHA further noted.

Although the havoc has been witnessed before during rainy seasons, it has this time been worsened by the construction of the Nairobi Expressway which has led to creation of many murram diversions along the highway.
