In line with KS 1515:2000-Code of practice for inspection of road vehicles, all used vehicles being imported into Kenya should not be more than eight years old from the Year of First Registration. Vehicles that comply with this law are provided with the KEBS Certificate of Roadworthiness (CoR).
In a notice published on MyGov, KEBS tasked Quality Inspection Service Inc. Japan (QISJ) to carry out the validation exercise.
This means that all vehicle importers will be required to undergo inspection before either importation or registration.
Kenyans with imported cars were directed to validate their import documents with an authorised entity. Those seeking validation of their documents will be mandated to pay Ksh.12,000 as an inspection fee to any local QISJ office.
According to KEBS, the crackdown would commence on July 14, 2025, targeting imported vehicles without the Certificate of Roadworthiness (CoR).
"Importers of used motor vehicles not accompanied by a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CoR) are required to submit copies of the logbook or de-registration certificate or export certificate from the country of last registration to any QISJ offices for validation," the notice read in part.
