KCPE top student scores 431 marks as gov't hails class of 2022

The top student in the 2022 KCPE examinations has garnered 431 marks, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has announced.

While announcing the results on Wednesday, CS Machogu said that the marks are a significant improvement from those of 2021 KCPE's top student who garnered 428 marks.

CS Machogu said that the same improvement has been reflected in the class of 2022's overall performance compared to 2021's KCPE class.

"In the overall performance of the 2022 KCPE examination, the overall performance improved compared to that of 2021. The mark of the highest candidate rose four points from 428 to 431 in 2022," said CS Machogu.

CS Machogu went on to add that there have been positive indicators of good performance better than the 2021 KCPE results with the number of candidates who scored between 200 to 299 marks increasing from 47.1% to 50.2%.

"The data analysis saw that more than half of all the candidates who sat the examination that is 619,593 (50.2%) scored between 200 and 299 marks as compared to 578,106 (47.1%) scored between the same in 2022,' he said.

"Additionally 1,170 candidates scored between 1 and 99 marks in 2021 and it has gone down to only 724 in 2022."

CS Machogu noted that the government commends the class of 2022 for registering a commendable performance and bearing a spirited academic campaign that defied the "tripple-challenge" which was occassioned by a General Election, COVID-19 and a disruped school calendar.

"I wish to particularly single out the 2022 KCPE cohort which was in Std 6 when COVID-19 hit the country and only assumed their classes upon reopening of schools in 2021. And in just 23 months they have been able to cover three school calendar years. This is astonishingly incredible," he said.

A total of 1,233,852 candidates sat for the examinations in 28,408 centres across the country. Of these candidates, 620,965 (50.32%) were boys while 612,887 (49.67%) were girls. This Machogu said is a "clear indication that the nation has achieved gender parity at primary school level."

Candidates who scored 400-500 marks were 9,443 (0.77%), 300-399 were 307,756 (24.94%), 200-299 were 619,593 (50.22%), 100-199 were 296,336 (24.2%) and those who scored 1-99 marks were 724 (0.06%).

CS Machogu added that all candidates will be admitted to Form 1 under the 100% transition policy. The selection exercise to Form 1 for all categories of schools will be concluded on January 16, 2023.
