Kalonzo calls out gov't over attack on Governor Arati, plan to arrest Mwangi wa Iria
Kalonzo cited the recent police raids on the premises of Kisii Governor Simba Arati, stating that an attack on governors is an attack on devolution.
“Governor Arati, I spoke with him on my way. DCI men entering his compound. An attack on that level is attacking the constitution that gave us the devolution. If you harass governors, you are harassing devolution,” he said.
Kalonzo was speaking at the burial ceremony of June Moi, the daughter of late former President Daniel Moi at Kabarak grounds in Nakuru.
Kalonzo also remarked on former Murang’a
Governor Mwangi Wa Iria’s impeding arrest, joking that he is glad he was able to attend
June Moi’s funeral.
“Former Governor Wa Iria was supposed to be
in jail. We thank God you are here today. They caught up with his wife. Hey man
you are strong,” he uttered.
His sentiments come after Governor Arati claimed
that DCI officers broke into his Nairobi office a day after recording a
statement at DCI offices alleging a police conspiracy to plant guns in his
residences.
Arati, in a press address on Tuesday
evening, disclosed that the security guard manning his office alerted him about
the unwanted guests who claimed to have been patrolling the area.
The Kisii Governor stated that when he
arrived at the premises, after attending a Council of Governors (CoG) meeting,
the officers were allegedly already in his office.
Arati further accused his political
detractors of using law enforcement agencies to intimidate him.
"Of course it is intimidation. I want
to say I will not be intimidated or scared. Do you walk into any compound in
Nairobi and force yourself as they claim they were just on patrol?" he said.
Meanwhile, former Murang’a Governor Mwangi
Wa Iria was set to appear before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission
(EACC) for questioning into fraud investigations amounting to Ksh.140 million
on Tuesday.
His lawyers had put in a request for him to
be allowed to postpone his appearance to Wednesday.
His co-accused persons including his wife
Jane Waigwe Kimani and her brother Solomon Mutura Kimani were however arrested
and arraigned before a Nairobi court.
