"The fact that one is behind bars does not mean your brain is behind bars. All one needs to do is to stay focused and go for the available opportunities."

Those are the brave words of Amelia Jacobeth Liabule that attest to her outstanding performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), where she received a score of 402 out of a possible 500.

The 31-year-old inmate at the Kakamega Women's Prison, facing a murder charge, did not dampen her spirits despite being isolated from normal life.

Speaking to the Daily Nation, Liabule said that she plans to further her studies in preparation for future examinations.

Still, within the prison walls, another candidate, Justine Wasike joined Liabule in celebration after scoring 312 marks in the examinations.

At 29, she is serving a 10-year-sentence for murder after being convicted in 2018.

Doreen Anabaka, the officer in charge of the prison congratulated them for their commendable performance, against all odds.

The exam period saw 1,225,507 candidates sit the test compared to 1,191,752 candidates in 2020.
