JKUAT closed indefinitely amid strike fears

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT) was on Wednesday closed indefinitely after the administration learnt of a planned strike by the students.

Students currently in session and boarding at the varsity’s halls of residence at the main campus were ordered to leave the university premises by 2.30pm.

“Students residing in the university are advised to vacate the university premises by 2.30p.m at the very latest. Further communication will be made as need be,” read part of an internal memo signed by the university’s registrar (academic affairs) Dr. E.T Muoria.

A student who sought anonymity confirmed to Citizen Digital that they were planning to go on strike over poor services at the institution but did not reveal when the strike was set to happen.

“We were to strike over negligence of student infrastructure such as poor sanitation, poor Wi-Fi connectivity in school,” said the student. ” we were issued a notice with less than ten minutes to vacate the hostels.”

This comes a day after students at Kenyatta University demonstrated complaining that the duration they had been in school was too short for the institution to administer end of semester exams.

“We wanted to know why we are sitting an exam yet the duration we have been in school is not enough to cover a semester’s course work,” lamented a student from Kenyatta University who did not want to be identified.

The university, however, was not closed and the examinations are set to go on as scheduled on Monday (November 20).
