Isiolo man hospitalised after chopping off his genitals

By Daniel Kalung'e

A 30-year-old man from Merti, Isiolo North, is recovering from severe mental and physical injuries after amputating his genitals due to depression brought on by drug abuse.

The man reportedly mutilated himself after his genitals began decomposing following an injury he inflicted using a metallic object. He delayed seeking medical attention, which worsened his condition.

Muslima Abdi, a well wisher who took him to the hospital, described Nura’s difficult background, highlighting the lack of support he faced in overcoming drug addiction, which ultimately led to his mental health issues.

Nura was initially admitted to Merti Sub-County Hospital before being referred to Isiolo Level 4 Hospital and later transferred to Meru Referral Hospital for more advanced treatment.

He is currently receiving mental health treatment at a private rehabilitation center in Camp Garba, Isiolo, as he adjusts to the reality of losing his reproductive organs.

Collins Shaban, the lead psychologist at the rehabilitation center, reported that Nura is responding well to treatment. However, there are concerns that he may experience renewed depression once his mental health stabilizes, as he comes to terms with his physical loss.

Shaban emphasized the importance of ongoing psychological support and counseling to help Nura adapt to his situation. He also called for specialized physical treatment, suggesting that plastic surgery might help address his current medical condition.

According to the center’s records, this is the second case of self-amputation of genitals linked to drug abuse.

"This individual abused substances including bhang, chabesi, tobacco, and antipsychotic medications," Shaban said.

The incident comes amid growing calls from parents and advocacy groups for security agencies to curb the widespread drug use in the county.

Just days ago, during a visit to the county, President William Ruto declared war on drug lords, leading to a crackdown on dealers and users alike.
