Indonesia to help Kenya grow edible oils industry - Trade CS Moses Kuria

Indonesia will support Kenya in achieving self-sufficiency in edible oils by implementing extensive palm oil, sunflower oil, and soya bean farming initiatives, Trade CS Moses Kuria has announced.

In a statement to newsrooms on Thursday, Kuria stated that he alongside President William Ruto and Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi will host a delegation from the Southeast Asia nationin Nairobi next week to hash out the nitty-gritty of a deal to develop Kenya's edible oil industry. Indonesia happens to be the largest producer of palm oil globally.

"The talks will be centred around supporting farmers in selected counties of Lamu, Kwale, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu and Busia through an outgrowth scheme as well as large-scale plantation farming," said the Trade CS.

"The Indonesian delegation will be led by Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan who coordinates 7 Ministries in President Joko Widodo's government. This is the second time in 6 months that Minister Luhut is visiting Kenya after his talks with President Ruto in January.

Luhut's visit is expected to prepare ground for a State Visit by President Jokowi in August.

"The delegation will also include government and private companies keen to invest in other sectors including the Blue Economy, Mining, Meat and Livestock, Apparels &Textiles, Geothermal Energy. Petroleum Refinery and Exploration, Sugar farming as well as Pharmaceutical Manufacturing."
