IEBC Selection Panel to be sued for consuming public funds without doing its job
Civil
societies will next week head to court
to sue the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel
over failure to constitute a formidable electoral agency.
They
argue that the Nelson Makanda-led committee has been in office gobbling up
public funds for over six months now since the court okayed it to kickstart the
process.
Led
by Uchaguzi Platform and the Elections Observations Group (ELOG), they say the
country has been subjected to uncertainty by lack of a properly constituted electoral
body yet the Selection Panel is sitting on the fence.
ELOG
boss Musau Mulee said the country risks facing the crisis of representation
citing Banisa Constituency which lost its MP Maalim Kullow March last year and
upto now is not represented in Parliament.
At
the same event the, the consortium through their legal consultant Steve Ogolla
poked holes on the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report which is already
before Parliament saying it has numerous constitutional gaps that need to be
bridged if the report is to be implemented.
They
allayed fears that some of the proposals in the nine Bills are unrealistic and
unconstitutional and were designed to settle political scores other than
reforming the governance architecture.
Through
lawyer Ogolla, they are now mulling challenging the recommendations in court
before their implementations.
This
as opposition leaders have been blaming the Executive for delaying the implementation
of the nine Bills.
