The state will settle hospital bills for victims on the Monday flash floods in Mai Mahiu, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has said.

Mwaura was speaking to the press in Mombasa where he confirmed that 73 people were injured in the tragedy and were admitted to nearby hospitals.

"All their hospital bills will be paid by the government in the spirit of solidarity," he said.

Mwaura mentioned that Nairobi county is the worst hit by the floods with 147,000 displaced, accounting for 77% of all displaced persons in the country and the government has set up 52 displacement camps to accommodate affected individuals.

The killer flash floods in Mai Mahiu have so far claimed 71 lives and 28 people are still missing.

The flash floods originated from a water body that burst on Monday morning. The water mass was a result of a blocked railway line tunnel preventing proper flow of water through River Tongi.

The Ministry of Interior on Tuesday issued a statement saying 46 people had died from the tragedy while 53 others were still missing.

Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua said by Tuesday morning 71 people had been confirmed dead, meaning 28 were still unaccounted for.
