The government has warned schools across the country against re-opening following the flood crisis occasioned by the ongoing heavy rains.

Speaking on the Hot 96 Breakfast show, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura called on school heads to adhere to the directive issued by President William Ruto.

The president directed the Ministry of Education to postpone the re-opening of all schools "until further notice", noting that the situation is likely to escalate in the coming days.

Schools were initially set for re-opening on April 29, 2024, but the date was later pushed to May 6, 2024, due to disruptions from the heavy rains.

"The Ministry of Education is directed to postpone the re-opening of all schools in the country for the second term until further notice," said Ruto on Friday.

Mwaura added that action will be taken against those found flouting the guidelines saying they will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

"Some of these schools are being used as rescue centres. So when they re-open, where do they expect members of the public who have been relocated to go?" Mwaura posed.

He added that the government is coordinating the relocation and evacuation of the affected members of the public in order to provide temporary shelter for displaced persons.
