Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia on Tuesday launched a 56 kilometre long road project in Kilifi county.

In a statement, the CS pointed out that the Bamba-Ganze-Kilifi road is geared towards accelerating socio-economic development by promoting trade and investment as well as improving access to social amenities such as schools, hospitals and markets.

"In 2017, we came to commission the road from Mariakani to Bamba and the president assured that we had to complete the project. We have come to keep the promise," said Macharia.

CS Macharia explained the key role of the road saying that it will serve as a bypass such that when someone is travelling from Nairobi to Kilifi, you will only be required to divert at Mariakani. There will be no need to go to Mombasa.

Macharia also noted that the 56km project will cost about Ksh. 2.1 billion.

Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi who was also present thanked the president for the initiative saying that it will go a long way in fostering economic development and easing travel in the region.

"It will be like a ring road connecting Mariakani, Bamba, Ganze, Kilifi and Malindi," he said.

Kingi outlined the problems that affected the people due to bad roads such as the long hours in travels and the continuous destruction of ambulances during their service delivery.

In his two-day tour in the region, the CS also launched construction of the 53.4km-long Mto Mwagodi-Musau-Wundanyi-Mgange-Bura Road in Taita/Taveta county on Monday.

According to the cabinet secretary, the road which traverses Mwatate and Wundanyi constituencies will aid in supporting many horticultural and dairy farms, local tourism and other economic activities.

While still in the region, he assessed the construction of the 9km-long Mombasa Southern Bypass, which includes two bridges and a viaduct with a total length of 2.8km.

"The dual carriageway aims at linking the South Coast with the Kenyan hinterland, and thus boosting the economic fortunes of the South Coast," explained the CS.

At the same time, Macharia has been supervising the construction of major roads in the counties of Mombasa, Taita and Kilifi saying that the projects are meant to be complete by next year.

“Phase two of the Ksh.24 billion Dongo Kundu Bypass is expected to be complete by May 2022,” read a statement on Monday.
