Gov't disburses Ksh.965.9M to cover intern doctors' arrears

Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa has announced that that the government has disbursed Ksh.965.9 million for payment of monthly stipends and arrears accrued to nursing, clinical officer, medical officer and pharmacist interns.

The statement comes after the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) called for the withdrawal of services by medical interns due to failure by the government to honor promises.

"The amount comprises Ksh.528,615,125.60 in arrears payment, Ksh.110,668,070 in regular payment for nursing and clinical officer interns. A further payment of Ksh.326,592,150 has been made as arrears and medical payments for medical, dental and pharmacists interns," Barasa said in a press briefing.

"These payments ensure that all posted interns in their specified cadres receive their dues without delay, demonstrating the ministry's dedication to addressing the welfare of Kenyan workers.

However, KMPDU maintains that the strike notice still stands, adding that the amount that the ministry is saying it has disbursed is against their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

According to KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, the amount caters for Ksh.40,000 net pay, which is in violation of the CBA.
