Kakamega Governor
Fernandes Barasa has expressed concerns over the delayed disbursement of funds
from the national treasury to 47 counties, revealing that no money has been
received since March 2023.
Addressing mourners
in Mumias West on Saturday, the governor highlighted the dire financial
situation faced by counties, stating that they are collectively owed a
staggering sum of Ksh.66 billion.
“The national government has not disbursed funds since March 2023. Before the end of this month, IFMIS will be closed, making it more difficult for governors to work. We appeal to treasury to release money owed to counties,” Barasa said.
He added that the
delay in the release of funds has resulted in significant challenges for the
counties, making it difficult for governors to effectively carry out their
daily operations and implement crucial programs.
County governments
heavily rely on these funds to provide essential services and drive development
projects within their jurisdictions.
Governor Barasa
emphasized the urgent need for the national treasury to expedite the
disbursement of funds to address the mounting financial constraints faced by
the counties.
His deputy Ayub
Savula called on President William Ruto to work with financial experts in
sorting out the stalemate.
