G4S, KK guards among suspects arrested over botched Barclays Bank heist in Ruiru

A G4S guard and another from KK Security Ltd are among four suspects who were arrested in Ruiru following a botched ATM robbery attempt.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) the four had attempted to empty the ATM several times with no success.

A mobile phone they were using to make contact with a source and a nylon sack they were to use in loading the money and a motorcycle they were to flee on among the seized items,” the DCI said.

The suspects have been identified as Hillary Ng’eno (KK Security Runda), Jared Nyang’au (G4S Ruiru), Douglas Momanyi (bodaboda rider) and Jacob Barasa.’

They are in police custody pending investigations into the matter.

In September this year, DCI detectives arrested another G4S employee in connection to the Ksh.72 million Nairobi West heist.

The sleuths, acting on a tip-off, arrested Bernard Sewanga at a newly rented house in Ruiru where he had reportedly gone to hide after the heist.

The suspect led the officers to the home of his father-in-law in Lurambi, Kakamega County, where Ksh.1 million was found in a black bag covered with a nylon paper buried in a cow shed.

And April this year, at least Ksh.14 million was stolen from three Barclays Bank ATMs in Nairobi.

The ATMs were in Mutindwa area, Kenyatta National Hospital and Mater Hospital.

Police indicated that the surveillance camera at Mater Hospital had been smeared with petroleum jelly to obstruct view.

At Mutindwa area, police said they established that the ATM is not covered by CCTV cameras and is also not manned by any guard.

According to police, the ATM at Kenyatta Hospital had been tampered with electronically and the money stolen.
