Family seeks justice as Boxing Champion Raphael Shigadi is laid to rest

The celebrated boxing champion, Raphael Shigali was allegedly shot dead near Mogas petrol station on Jogoo Road, Nairobi.

A sombre mood engulfed Mwilonje village in Emuhaya, Vihiga County on Saturday, during the burial of Raphael Shigadi Alvoya.

The Boxing Champion was shot dead by police in Nairobi's Makadara area during anti-government protests on July 12.

According to relatives, Raphael, who was the Nairobi  Bantamweight Champion, was shot dead as he was returning home from a training session.

Local leaders from Vihiga County and relatives are now seeking justice for the victim.

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Luanda Member of Parliament Dick Maungu accused the police of using live ammunition on unarmed protestors.

Osotsi said Azimio is in the process of gathering evidence of police brutality and that perpetrators will be brought to book.

The sentiments were echoed by Luanda Member of Parliament Dick Maungu, who said it was unfortunate for police to kill and maim innocent youths who were peacefully protesting against the high cost of living.

Colleague Boxers from Jericho Boxing Club described the deceased as a polite and outgoing person who did not deserve to die from a bullet.

The 34-year-old left behind his wife Judy Wanjiku and three children.
