The family of Vincent Kipkurui Too is in agony following the death of the 26-year-old in an explosion in Lamu.
Joseph Cheruiyot, the father, said they received information from Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) officers who arrived at the home on Friday.
“He was based in Lanet, Nakuru but was amongst the officers who had been picked to go for the operation at Boni forest a month ago where he met his death,” he said.
Ruth Cheruiyot, mother deceased officer, was distraught as she spoke to journalists saying she has lost a beloved son.
Following news of the tragedy, locals and relatives trooped to the home at Chebara village in Keringet ward, Kuresoi to condole with the family.
On May 19, KDF Spokesperson Col. Zipporah Kioko said three soldiers succumbed to injuries sustained during an attack in Baure, Lamu County.
“These soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Kenya. The entire KDF fraternity condoles with their families,” she said in a statement.
According to Col. Kioko, multi-agency security teams have intensified the pursuit for perpetrators of the heinous attack.
She reiterated that “KDF remains unbowed, and together with the multi-agency security teams deployed under Operation Amani Boni, remains focused and has the resolve to help bring sustainable peace in the area.”
The KDF Spokesperson further noted that the teams have heightened the manning of routes into and out of the area so as to deny the enemy movement.
“In support of the current efforts, Baure area residents have shared credible information on the identities of sympathisers and the attackers. In the meantime, the wounded personnel who were evacuated to specialised medical facilities in Nairobi, are responding well to treatment,” she said.
“The Kenya Defence Forces takes cognisance of the courage demonstrated by the soldiers,” she added.
