Environment CS Duale flags off Mandera Green Future initiative
Mandera County has launched an ambitious
afforestation program aimed at transforming its harsh semi-arid environment
while providing stable income opportunities for local residents.
The Mandera Municipality Greening Program
seeks to tackle climate challenges and socio-economic issues through tree
planting and critical water infrastructure to improve both the city environment
and the livelihoods of the community.
Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale
flagged off the initiative on Friday, noting that trees not only provide
much-needed shade and cooling, but also enhance the quality of life in the
region.
The program involves over 1,300
participants, with a focus on women and youth who receive monthly stipends, as
well as Indigenous communities, local schools, and youth groups. It is
designed to provide stable income for vulnerable groups.
After completion, the afforestation program
will mitigate the effects of climate change, reduce poverty, and empower
residents through job creation.
By engaging local communities in environmental
stewardship, the initiative also fosters a sense of ownership and ensures
long-term sustainability by addressing poverty and unemployment in the
area.
So far, the program has attracted active
participation from community members and local institutions with water storage
infrastructure already in place to facilitate tree planting.
Consequently, underground and elevated water
tanks that are regularly replenished by water bowsers have been installed to
help in irrigation in the absence of rains.
The afforestation program marks a significant
step forward in addressing the region’s climate challenges, while simultaneously
empowering vulnerable individuals and fostering a culture of environmental
responsibility.
At the meeting, also attended by several
senior Mandera County officials, CS Duale and Governor Mohamed Khalif explored
opportunities for expanded partnership in climate action and restoration of the
expansive ASAL county through the 15 Billion National Tree Growing Programme.
