Drama as Catholic nuns embroiled in fight over school property in Karen
Calls have been made to the leadership of the
Catholic Church in Nairobi to step in and solve a property row pitting the
Assumption Sisters and the administration of the Our Lady of Peace School in
Karen.
The school's administration accuses the Assumption
Sisters of being behind the sponsorship of goons who attacked staffers at the
institution demanding that they vacate with immediate effect.
Police however promptly responded to distress calls
from the learning institution, repulsing the goons and containing the
situation.
While it is alleged that the nuns have staged a
takeover of the school seeking to push out the administration, the staffers say
they will not budge.
“They
came as thugs with crowbars, machetes, crude weapons, and started breaking the
doors and offices...which is very sad,” Chair of the school board, William
Kinuthia, said.
“We
go to church also but I feel like this should not happen in a Catholic Church.”
Our
Lady of Peace lawyer John Swaka added: “This property belongs to the school.
Anyone who seeks to claim it is absolutely wrong because there is clear
documentation demonstrating who the proprietor of the school is.”
