DPP withdraws Ksh.19M graft charges against CS nominee Aisha Jumwa
The Director General of Public Prosecutions
has issued a request to withdraw the corruption case against Aisha Jumwa who
was recently appointed Public Service and Gender Cabinet Secretary.
Jumwa, who was a Member of Parliament for
Malindi was facing charges of illegally obtaining Ksh.19 million.
Through the head of prosecution Alex Akula,
the DPP's office informed Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku that it has received
orders to withdraw the case against Jumwa who is the first defendant in the
case.
However, the case of the 8 others the CS
nominee was charged with will continue.
Jumwa's lawyers, led by Jared Magolo, welcomed
the move and further sought an apology from the government for the charges pressed
against her.
Justice Mutuku ordered that the case be
mentioned to allow the other 8 defendants to be re-indicted.
Jumwa was accused alongside Wachu Omar,
Kennedy Otieno, Bernard Riba, Sophia Saidi, Margaret Kalume, Robert Katana and
Multiserve Contractors.
The accusation allegedly took place between
May and October 2018 in Malindi constituency, Kilifi County.
The case will be mentioned on the 17th of this month for further direction.
