DP Gachagua scoffs at Raila's plan to collect signatures to 'remove' President Ruto

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said the Raila Odinga-led Azimio collection is participating in an exercise in futility by collecting signatures in a bid to 'remove' President William Ruto from power.

Azimio began a rigorous bid during Saba Saba protests on Friday to collect 10 million signatures to remove Ruto from power.

However, speaking in Giaituu village, Mathira constituency, on Saturday, the DP said elections are not decided by signatures.

He spoke while attending the burial of David Muriithi, a grassroot political supporter.

"Even if they collect those signatures, where will they take them? People signed on the ballot and that was the end," Gachagua said.

"I want to tell the people of Kenya to stay focused; we are not bothered by the noise of the opposition."

Gachagua went on to refer to Raila as a 'project' that failed, adding that the Saba Saba demos were also a project that would fail.

"They are saying they will remove Ruto from power. How will they if they failed when he was not in power. There is no constitutional provision for the collection of signatures," he said.

When it comes to removing a sitting president from office, there are two ways this can be done: impeachment and due to incapacity.

In impeachment, a legislator, supported by at least one third of MPs, can move a motion of impeachment for gross violation of the Constitution, commission of a crime under national or international law, or gross misconduct.

If the motion is supported by two-thirds of MPs, the speaker relays the information to his Senate counterpart. A meeting is convened to hear the charges and a special committee probes the matter.

The President is allowed to appear before the committee and also represented.

A vote is taken and if two-thirds of the Senate vote to uphold the impeachment charge, the President is impeached.
