Double grief for Bomet family after dead baby ‘disappears’ from Nakuru hospital morgue
A family in Nakuru is in distress following a disappearance of
the body of their 7-month-old baby who passed on Monday this week.
The family from Menengai East visited the Nakuru Level Five Hospital
mortuary to pick the body of the first-born daughter Mercy Chelangat for burial,
only to be informed that the body was nowhere to be found.
“Tukanunua jeneza, nguo za mtoto kumvalisha, tukaenda nazo
mortury, tukafika wakauliza nguo za mtoto ziko wapi tukapeana nguo…ni mimi
nilikuwa nazo…kidogo mama akauliza mtoto ako wapi…wakamuambia eti mtoto
amepotea na ndiyo tunatafuta, mwili imechanganyika na nyingine,” said a
relative, Winnie Odanga.
The baby’s father Daniel Kipchirir stated: “Tukakaa tukakaa tukauliza ni nini inafanyika
hamjamaliza kuvalisha mtoto? Wakasema mtoto ni mubaridi tumemtoa sasa baridi
imtoke alafu ndiyo tumvalishe nguo, nikamwambia lakini unajua tunasafiri kwenda
Bomet? Mara ya pili sasa wakatuambia sasa tunamvalisha nguo, tukangoja
tukangoja, baadaye tena wanaleta hadithi nyingene tena eti mtoto amepotea.”
As they struggle to process the devastating news of their
firstborn child’s missing body, family and friends in Bomet County who had been
preparing for the burial are left utterly speechless, unable to comprehend the
unimaginable.
The baby’s photos, along with the food that was lovingly
prepared for the occasion, now stand as heartbreaking reminders of this double
loss; grief upon grief.
The Nakuru County government has confirmed that investigations
have been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic
incident and uncover the truth of what happened.
