Devki Group Unveils Ksh.11 Billion Iron Ore Pelletization Plant in Taita Taveta
The project, expected to transform the region’s economy, was inaugurated in a groundbreaking ceremony attended by President William Ruto.
Owned by industrial magnate Narendra Raval, the plant is set to create 3,000 jobs within its initial six months of operation.
Once fully operational, the workforce is projected to grow to over 14,000, significantly boosting local employment and economic activity.
Speaking at the event, Mr Raval described the project as a milestone for Devki Group, the country, and the Taita Taveta community.
He emphasized the plant’s potential to support local miners by providing modern equipment to enhance production while ensuring a steady supply of raw materials to the facility.
“This project will uplift the local economy and provide thousands of jobs. Currently, we pay Ksh.2 billion in taxes every month, and this figure will rise once the plant is fully operational, with continued support from both local and national governments,” Mr Raval stated.
Governor Andrew Mwadime also praised the investment, noting its transformative potential for the county. “Taita Taveta has vast resources, including iron ore, yet our people have suffered for years. This plant will not only employ over 14,000 people but also spur economic growth and revenue generation,” he said.
The governor urged the national government to attract more investors to the county, pledging support through land allocation for similar ventures.
President Ruto highlighted his administration’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for both local and international investors.
“We aim to increase the manufacturing sector’s contribution to the GDP to 15% by 2027 and 20% by 2030. This project demonstrates our dedication to creating jobs and improving livelihoods,” he remarked.
The president also underscored the importance of the manufacturing sector, noting it is the second-largest employer in the country, with 360,000 direct jobs and countless others indirectly supported.
Devki Group plans to further expand its workforce to 30,000 employees as part of its long-term vision to cement its role as a key player in Kenya’s industrial growth.
