According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), CCTV footage obtained from the scene captured Jirongo’s final movements near the Eagol Petrol Station.
The footage shows a public service bus operated by Climax Company Ltd colliding head-on with Jirongo’s vehicle.
Investigators also focused on a white Toyota Probox seen in the recording.
The vehicle was traced to its registered owner, William Mutai, the Member of County Assembly for Keringet Ward and Majority Leader of the Nakuru County Assembly.
DCI reports indicate that on December 11, 2025, Mutai’s wife hired out the vehicle to Denis Kipyegon Koech, who planned to transport relatives to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive a family member returning from New Mexico University in the United States.
On their return journey, the family stopped at the Eagol Petrol Station shortly after midnight to refuel.
They reportedly observed Jirongo exit the station moments before hearing a loud crash. According to statements taken by investigators, they then saw a bus dragging the victim’s vehicle along the road.
A security guard at the station asked the family to assist by using their headlights to illuminate the wreckage while emergency efforts were underway.
As traffic began to build, the family left the scene and only learned Jirongo’s identity after arriving home.
“The DCI is interrogating the veracity of the claims and reassures the family, friends, and the people of Kenya that thorough and impartial investigations into this incident are ongoing,” the agency said in a statement.
Authorities say further updates will be issued as inquiries continue.
