Deputy IG Lagat makes impromptu visits to police stations, urges officers to follow the law

Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Eliud Lagat addresses officers at Kondele Police Station on August 16, 2024.

Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Eliud Lagat has concluded his three-day tour of police stations at Kondele Police Station and Regional Police Headquarters in Nyanza where he emphasised the importance of professionalism in the service.

The DIG stressed that officers need to be guided by the law when serving Kenyans to ensure they are accountable of their actions.

He also commended the officers for their dedication to duty and appealed to them to embrace modern-day policing in addressing security challenges.

While addressing mental health challenges within the service, Lagat urged them to  seek assistance through NPS Mental wellness departments or by speaking to confidants.

DIG Lagat who began his impromptu visits to Police stations on Friday has visited Nakuru Central, Cheptulu, Mbale, Kondele police stations as well as Vihiga County Headquarters and Regional Headquarters Nyanza.

The DIG was accompanied by Kenya Police Service (KPS) Director Logistics, Peter Ndung’u,  NPS Spokesperson Resila Onyango and KPS Deputy Director Operations Benard Mbatha.

Lagat said that his vision is to restore trust among the members of public across Kenya.

His impromptu visits come at a time when Kenyans have raised questions over cases of police brutality during the antigovernment protests that pushed for President William Ruto's exit from office.

Human Rights groups said that in the past two months, cases of mysterious disappearances and unlawful arrests were on the rise. The latest data by Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) recorded 60 deaths and 66 disappearances.
