A police constable (PC) attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Makadara was on Tuesday shot dead by three armed robbers in Kayole, Nairobi County.

Constable David Mayaka was driving home in the company of his wife at around 10 pm when his would-be killers, riding on a motorcycle, stopped next to his vehicle at Mihango area before opening fire and shooting the officer in the abdomen.

According to the DCI, Mayaka had stopped to change a flat tyre during the incident that saw his wife, Hellen Kemunto, shot in the leg as she attempted to flee the scene.

The whole incident was captured by a nearby CCTV surveillance system.

Confirming the incident, Nairobi Police boss Adamson Bungei noted that the gang of three lowered Mayaka's guard by alleging that they had stopped to assist him to change the flat tyre.

The interaction soon after turned confrontational over yet-to-be-determined reasons, with police saying Mayaka attempted to go inside his vehicle to retrieve his State-issued firearm.

"The gang jumped onto their motorcycle (whose license plates had been obscured) and one of them opened fire shooting the officer in the abdomen," said the DCI.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the bloodied and visibly distraught Kemunto in tears and rushed her to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Mayaka's body was likewise moved to a local mortuary for storage pending postmortem.

“The wife is in stable condition. No arrest has been made so far but we have a team on the ground looking for the gang behind the shooting,” Bungei said.

The police boss added that the suspects were allegedly on a random robbery spree when they encountered Mayaka and Kemunto.

DCI officers from Nairobi and Kayole are currently investigating the officer's murder.
