Experts in the technology sector warned that the crimes could reverse the gains made in Information Technology (IT) if left unchecked.

While speaking during the opening of the chief information officers’ (CIO) annual symposium meeting in Naivasha, Chief Information Officers’ East Africa Boss Harry Harre noted that cyber crime cases were serious and affected all sectors of the economy.

He further noted that there was need to harness tracking of the hackers as they were also rising and targeting new business entrants to the internet world.

According to a report ‘Kenya Cyber Security Report 2014’ released by Ministry of Information in conjunction with stakeholders in the ICT sector, Kenya loses two billion shillings annually due to cyber crime.

The report also revealed that terrorists and other cyber criminals have turned to social media networks to commit crimes.

Principal Secretary in the ministry of Information and Technology, Joseph Tiampati urged organizations to establish and maintain adaptable security policies and infrastructure that can be used to coordinate response to ICT security threats.
