Cut non-priority spending, redirect public resources to flood victims, Karua tells gov't

Karua, in a statement issued on Monday, also urged the Education Ministry to reconsider the postponement of school reopening to ensure the safety of students, as well as relocate those affected by the floods. 

The NARC Kenya party leader also wants the government to allocate emergency funds to flood-affected families to assist with resettlement once the rains stop. 

At the same time, Karua, who blamed the government for failing to plan despite all of the warning signs, wants the replacement fee for documents lost in the floods waived, as well as school fees for flood-affected children. 

"We demand that the administration suspend non-priority spending such as excessive executive travel and large hospitality budgets, to name a few, and replace it with urgent needs such as doctors, CBS, and flood victims," Karua stated. 

According to Karua, the tragedy in Kihara and Jijabe could have been avoided if the two levels of government had acted sooner, especially since the floods had been ongoing for more than a week. 

"We hope the directive to assess the security of all dams countrywide will be acted on with the urgency it deserves to avert further loss of lives  property and displacement. ," Karua said. 

"It is the duty of this regime to respond swiftly to evacuate and provide adequate shelter and amenities to those affected."
