COVID-19: Kenya records 149 new cases, positivity rate rises to 6.5%

The Ministry of Health has announced that Kenya recorded 149 more COVID-19 positive cases on Monday.

The 149 were drawn out of a sample size of 2280, bringing the positivity rate to 6.5 percent, up from the 2.4 and 5.0 recorded on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Out of the cases, 143 are Kenyans while 6 are foreigners; 81 are female and 68 male. The youngest is a one-year-old child while the oldest is 97 years. 

The total number of cumulative cases recorded since March 2020 now stands at 256,484, out of 2,891,893 tests conducted.

Nairobi County recorded 123 cases, while the rest were distributed across 11 other counties: Machakos 13, Mombasa 3, Kiambu 2, Kajiado 1, Kericho 1, Kitui 1, Nakuru 1, Narok 1, Taita Taveta 1, Uasin Gishu 1 and West Pokot 1.

At the same time, the Ministry stated that  36 patients have recovered from the disease, 26 of whom are from various health facilities and 10 from the HomeBased Isolation and Care program. 

The total recoveries now stand at 248,551.

The Ministry also announced that one person had succumbed to the disease which is a late death reported after conducting facility record audits for November. This brings the cumulative fatalities to 5,349.

Meanwhile, 175 patients are admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 842 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program. 

In the vaccination front, a total of 8,189,322 vaccines have so far been administered across the country as of December 12. 

“Of these, 4,928,719 were partially vaccinated while those fully vaccinated were 3,260,603,” stated Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.

“The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose was at 57.3%. 

“Proportion of adults fully vaccinated was 12.0%. The Government is working towards vaccinating a targeted population of 27,246,033,” he added.

Nairobi County is still leading with 30.4% of its population fully vaccinated, followed by Nyeri at 25.3%, Kiambu 19.2%, Laikipia 19.0% and Murang’a at 14.7%

On the other hand, Wajir is among the counties with the least number of population fully vaccinated at 2.7% and Mandera at 2.4%
