COP27 summit opens as world races against climate clock

A few hours after the World Conference on Climate Change, at the Blue Zone in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, was formally opened by Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, the COP27 President, civil society organizations came out to speculate about plans by developed nations to weaken discussions on issues relating to climate change effects in developing nations.

The complaints come as the COP27 presidency formally adds loss and damage funding as an important Agenda item for discussion within the 14-day window for the first time.

The Pan African Climate Justice (PACJA) Executive Director, Mithika Mwenda, and other members of the African Civil Society have expressed concern about a rumoured plan to weaken the negotiations aimed at finding solutions for African countries.

"We are Condemning the plans by the Developed countries to water down the talks, this is not the first COP we are attending, we have talked with many key people today and it is out there that they have plans to frustrate deliberations." Mwenda said.

Mwenda spoke at the Green Zone in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, just a few kilometers from the main Convention Center.

Mr.Tumal orto, on the other hand, expressed satisfaction with the adoption of the Loss and Damage Agenda in the World Meeting, hoping that discussions will result in positive compensation for Pastoralists who have lost their animals due to the biting drought in Kenya.

Mr. Tumal is a pastoralist from Marsabit, Kenya, and the Pastoralists Grassroots Leader Representative at COP 27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
