Climate Change Effects financing to dominate COP27 talks in Egypt

Climate Change Effects financing will dominate discussions during the United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties in-Sharm El Sheikh- Egypt.

The chairman of the African Group of Negotiators on climate change Mr.Ephraim Shitima said that the continent will continue to reiterate the importance of delivering the 100 billion dollars a year by 2020 goal that was not met by developed countries.

Shitima was addressing a Pre-COP event organized by Pan African Climate Justice Alliance event held in South Sinai Sharm El Sheikh-Egypt.

This is even as the Global attention has shifted to Sharm El Sheikh, the venue of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference of Parties.

The World meeting will be held from 7th to the 18th November 2022 and it is coming at a time when Africa is facing major calamities caused by global warming. 

The conference comes amid unmet climate commitments from previous meetings, the global energy and food crisis that is causing unrest in many countries around the World.

The chair of the African Group of Negotiators on climate change Ephraim Shitima reiterated that COP27 should focus on advancing the implementation of the national determined contributions, the adaptation as well as the delivery of finance to enhance implementation of climate actions.

On the other hand, the African group of negotiators legal advisor Professor Seth Osafo said that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has strained financial resources to Africa, urging Africa to rethink its reliance on Western financing,"this is likely to be a challenge due to limited budgetary resources in many African countries."he cautioned.

Another conversation that is expected to gain prominence at the COP27 is loss and damage Narrative; with African countries planning to push rich countries to compensate for lost and damaged sources of wealth caused by climate change Effects.

The 27th Conference of Parties (COP 27) by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change officially kicks off on Sunday 6th November in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
