China to fund billions for SGR extension from Naivasha to Malaba: Mudavadi

Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi holds talks with Guo Haiyan, the newly appointed Ambassador of China to Kenya, at his office on January 16, 2025.

Kenya is expected to receive financial backing from China for the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to the Malaba border; a plan that will enhance the Nairobi-Nakuru-Malaba road network.

This was part of the discussions held between Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and the Ambassador of China to Kenya, Guo Haiyan held on Thursday.

According to Mudavadi, China and Kenya will explore further strategic partnerships which will play a key role in driving economic growth and fostering regional development.

"As Kenya continues to strengthen its strategic partnership with China, this collaboration will play a significant role in driving economic growth, fostering regional development, and contributing to broader prosperity across the African continent," Mudavadi said.

"I warmly welcome Ambassador Guo to Kenya and wish her a successful and fulfilling tenure in our great nation."

The government projects to complete the 475 Kilometre-SGR extension in June 2028 using over Ksh.720 billion. The construction will begin early this year with at least 10 per cent to be completed by June.

Mudavadi's talks coincide with President William Ruto's visit to China in September last year where funds for the SGR extension were among his key discussions.
