Chief burnt to death at public meeting in Marsabit

Police in Marsabit County are looking for assailants who attacked and burnt a chief to death in broad daylight.

Dirip Gombo Location Chief George Biqa was attacked during the burial of one of the two Kenya Police Reservist officers who were killed in a bandit attack on Saturday.

According to eyewitnesses, Mr. Gombo was attacked by a group of people who branded him a traitor, as they descended on him with kicks and blows before setting him a blaze.

Police have been deployed in the area in numbers to track down the killers.

Sources privy to the investigations say that the community from which the chief comes from were angered on Friday when the chief attended a function led by Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani to officially recognise the Wayu community as Kenyans.

The violence came in the backdrop of recent clashes between Gabra and Borana communities that left 14 dead and several others injured.

Tens of houses were also burnt, with Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i linking the violence to politicians.

In October, North Horr MP Chachu Ganya and his Saku counterpart Dido Rasso were arrested and charged with incitement to violence.

No one has been arrested in connection with the latest violence which took place about 19 kilometers from Marsabit town.
