Chaos erupts at burial in Kericho as MCAs clash over Governor Mutai's impeachment
Chaos
erupted in Kipkerieny village in Kericho County at the burial of the late
former Member of County Assembly Jones Kiplagat Mutai, after members of the Kericho
County Assembly differed due to political tensions concerning the impeachment
of Governor Erick Mutai.
According
to residents who attended the burial, the unrest began after Nominated MCA Dora Keino expressed her support for the impeachment, causing outrage among
Governor Mutai's supporters.
The
chaos caused the MCAs who are in support of the impeachment to be cut short in
their speeches.
Religious
leaders who were present at the burial urged the leaders in the region to
preach peace and maintain decorum at such solemn events.
Mutai's
impeachment will take centre stage at the Senate on Monday and Tuesday, as
Senators will determine whether to uphold the motion or provide another lifeline
to the embattled Governor.
The
impeachment motion against Governor Mutai was tabled by Sigowet Ward MCA
Kiprotich Rogony and was passed last week after 31 members supported it.
The
motion cited allegations of gross constitutional violations, abuse of office,
and misuse of public resources.
Senators
will now hear the impeachment motion through the plenary after they failed to
support a motion by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to establish a special
committee of 11 members to investigate the charges.
The
motion by Sifuna failed to move through after Nominated Senator Veronica Maina
declined to second it.
Speaker
Amason Kingi thereafter ruled that the hearing on the impeachment motion will
be heard on October 14-15, 2024.
