Catholic Bishops urge Gen Z to embrace structured inclusive dialogue

The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has asked youthful protesters to embrace a structured multi-sectoral dialogue to resolve the issues facing the country, especially the Gen-Z protests.

KCCB has publicly distanced itself from an ongoing petition aimed at removing President William Ruto from office.

KCCB Chairman Archbishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba, speaking in Isiolo during the Episcopal Ordination of Co-Adjutor Bishop Peter Munguti Makau, emphasized the need for structured dialogue to address the current crisis.

“Dialogue should not be about sharing political positions but about building a prosperous and inclusive nation where everyone feels they belong we all embrace constitutionalism and citizens receive value for their taxes,” he said.

Archbishop Makumba has urged national leaders not to harden their hearts and called on the youth to embrace dialogue, while emphasizing that the government should work on issues of corruption and over-taxation without corresponding services, urging a review of taxation policies.

"Young people have spoken loudly about the direction they want through social media and demonstrations, they have made it clear that we cannot continue doing things the same all day without the national leadership. They should not be so hard in their hearts but to listen to the voices of the youth and of the nation but on the other hand, we appeal to the youth to embrace structured dialogue,” added the Bishop.

KCCB has also condemned those exploiting the demonstrations for personal gain urging all parties to seize this moment for constructive engagement.

“While the youth have been peaceful in their demands we are concerned about those taking advantage of these demonstrations to loot businesses and harm demonstrators we urge the security agencies to train these law breakers we must all uphold the rule of law and let there be justice for all the victims as we appeal for calm and peace in our nation,” the Archbishop noted.

KCCB also distanced itself from an ongoing petition aimed at removing President Ruto from office.

“We distance ourselves from the petition currently before the high court to remove the president, from office because our name was included without consultation. We believe the ongoing crisis should be an opportunity to find a lasting solution through genuine dialogue,” he added.

The bishops asked the government to offer Kenyans value for the taxes deducted and to review taxation policies to ensure that Kenyans do not suffer as a result of over-taxation.
