Bungoma County to settle Ksh.294M debt before handing over Sang’alo-Kanduyi Road to KeNHA

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka speaks before the Senate Standing Committee on Roads and Transportation at Bunge Towers in Nairobi on March 13, 2025.
The Bungoma County government will hand over the
Sang’alo-Kanduyi dual carriage road to the Kenya National Highways Authority
(KeNHA) for maintenance once all pending bills are settled, Governor Kenneth
Lusaka has confirmed.
Speaking when he appeared before the Senate Standing Committee
on Roads and Transportation at Bunge Towers in Nairobi, Lusaka stated that the
county has committed to clearing outstanding payments owed to road contractors
before the transfer takes place.
Bungoma County Executive for Roads, Bonventure Chengeck,
revealed that the county government still owes the contractor Ksh.294 million,
with an accrued interest of Ksh.108 million.
He assured the committee that the payments have been budgeted
for in the 2024/25 financial year and will be fully settled by the 2026/27
financial year.
The committee, chaired by Senator Eddy Gicheru Oketch, sought
clarification on the status of the road’s construction, including whether there
were pending bills and how the county planned to address them.
Further, Governor Lusaka emphasized that the road’s
development was part of an agreement between the Bungoma County government and
KeNHA, ensuring that once the financial obligations are met, the State
authority will take over its maintenance.
Also present during the session were committee Vice
Chairperson Dr. Lelegwe Ltumbesi, Senators Mohammed Chute, Peris Tobiko, Enoch
Wambua, and Crystal Asige.
