Bartender seeks justice, says turning down assistant chief's advances left her with a broken leg

By Weru Mwangi

Police officers in Gatundu South's Ng'enda Ward are investigating an incident in which a bartender at Ihura village suffered a broken leg after reportedly being attacked by her area assistant chief.

Jackline Wanjiru, 26, told Gatundu police officers that she had been attacked and beaten with a baton by Benjamin Maina, the area assistant chief, for selling alcohol during prohibited hours.

She claims that on the fateful day, the administrator found her washing dishes behind the pub where she resides, and accused her of operating the club during prohibited hours.

Wanjiru told Inooro TV that she was rushed to Gatundu level Five hospital after suffering injuries in the attack.

According to a medical report from Gatundu level 5 hospital, Wanjiru suffered from ankle joint dislocation.

In an unexpected twist, Wanjiru claims the assistant chief attacked her for refusing his numerous sexual advances, and that the unjustified attack has left her unable to care for her two school-aged children.

During an interview at her home, she stated that her efforts to seek justice have come to a halt due to police officers to whom the matter was reported leading her in circles.

Meanwhile, the assistant chief has denied the allegations, claiming that the pub where Wanjiru works is notoriously troublesome and is located in a residential area.

“We have even done several meetings at the village and locals said they do not want the club,” said Maina.

On the material day, Maina said he was on a raid alongside six other colleagues at the pub when Wanjiru fled through the backdoor and, as a result, dislocated her ankle.

He claimed that the club had been breaking liquor laws by operating during prohibited hours and had been on the radar of local authorities.

Concerning the allegations of sexual advances, the assistant chief denied them, claiming that he could not make love with a stranger because he did not know Wanjiru before the alleged incident.

The assistant chief upheld that while Wanjiru has been on a witch-hunt mission to injure his reputation, he will not be cowed to carry out his duties of enforcing government policies.
