Siaya Governor James Orengo has welcomed Raila Odinga's move to contest for the African Union (AU) Commission chairmanship, saying he has what it takes to lead Africa.

Speaking in Siaya on Saturday, Orengo stated that the position will not prevent Raila from his constitutional right of actively participating in Kenya's political activities.

"I want to remove any doubt for the doubting Thomases, that Raila's rights under the constitution have not been suspended, he has a right to participate in the political affairs of Kenya, both as its citizen and as a patriot," Orengo said.

The governor added that Raila's ODM party will still be strong even when he is busy with AU commitments, terming it as a nationwide party that enjoys immense following in all regions of the country.

"We know that ODM will survive not in this century but will continue to be one of the most important and influential in Kenya if not in Africa," Orengo added.

His sentiments come amid speculation that Raila has quit Kenyan politics with his eyes firmly fixed on the AU Commission job.

So far, the former premier has received support both from the government and his opposition teammates.

Raila announced he will be vying for the position to replace outgoing AUC chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat. If elected, he will serve for four years upon which he will seek re-election if he wishes to.
