Attempts to revive Mungiki will be met with swift, decisive action-DP Gachagua

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has warned that any attempt to resurrect the outlawed Mungiki sect will be met with swift and decisive action.

The second-in-command spoke in Thika on Sunday while accompanying a host of leaders to a religious event held at the AIPCA church.

"That person who is reviving this gang is setting up our children to be killed," DP Gachagua told congregants.

"I want to ask parents to talk to their boys, church leaders to talk to their children not to allow to be misused and set for trouble.

Gachagua described the sect as a "criminal gang," saying that at its peak, the gang was known for rapes and extortion, among other criminal activities.

"There is no way that this government will allow that gang to threaten our women, to rape our children, to extort money from businesses, to sell fear to farmers and those activities they were doing those years," DP Gachagua said

"They beheaded people, they raped young girls, they defiled children and captured the Matatu industry,"

He blamed the sect's revival on a "few people taking advantage of jobless youth in Central Kenya."

He singled out the sect's leader, claiming that he lives lavishly and owns at least nine homes in the country, all of which are funded by sect activities.

"As we speak today, he has 9 homes in this country... in Lavington, Kitengela, Nyahururu.... posh homes," he added.

"Hao vijana wanaokota pesa kwa watu wanampelekea.... these are children of poor people who are being taken advantage of,"

At the same time, DP Gachagua claimed, without naming anyone, that some leaders were behind the revival of the dreaded sect, ostensibly to threaten the government and make the country ungovernable.

"Wanataka kutumia watoto ya watu maskini hapa mlima Kenya, that they can use them to come and undermine government," said Gachagua
