On Sunday morning, Mwabili was found dumped in a bush in Kinondo area, near Diani, Kwale County.
Human rights defender Hussein Khalid on Sunday morning informed the public that in Diani, Mwabili contacted his family, who reached out to Vocal Africa. He had walked for about 3 kilometres.
Vocal Africa CEO Khalid reports that while in Diani, Mwabili presented himself to a police station, where he was met with threats of detention. He was released on the intervention of human rights officers.
"Presently, Mwabili has been rushed to Pandya hospital, Mombasa, for a quick medical check-up after which he will be put on a flight to Nairobi to reunite with his family," says Vocal Africa CEO.
Mwabili, a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza government and a hotelier in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, was reportedly picked up by security officers on Wednesday night while on his way to the hotel.
The family claimed he had been under surveillance over his involvement in Gen Z protests in June 2024.
The family expressed fear that Mwabili was a marked man as threats allegedly started way back in October last year following his participation in the Gen Z protests.
A case in point was when he led protests at a church service attended by President William Ruto in Nyahururu, Laikipia County in 2024.
"In October 2024, my parents received visitors who identified themselves as DCI, and they warned them that he should cool off matters Gen Z protests and take care of his family, failure to which – to quote my parents – 'Mama msije mtaweka hema hapa'," Mwabili's sister Isabella Kituri recalled.
