ACK bishops ban politics in churches, funerals
The Anglican
Church of Kenya (ACK) Bishops from Nyanza have once more affirmed their
opposition to politics in churches and funerals in the region.
The church leaders
said funeral services or church functions are not political arenas and they
shall not allow leaders to talk politics on such occasions.
The clergy asked the ACK member churches in the region not to allow politicians to turn
church pulpits into political grounds.
In a joint
statement, the bishops told off leaders who use church donations as bait to
talk politics in church saying they can as well keep their offerings.
The bishops said giving
to the church as a bait for political motive is immoral and must be discouraged
at all costs.
They called on
politicians from the Nyanza region to respect such lines of engagements since
church leaders too do not interfere with their political events.
Speaking in
Nyakach after a prayer service, the church leaders pointed out that funerals should
be left for mourners and grieving families, adding that it's distasteful for
leaders to turn such into political rallies.
The Bishops
included Rev Dr. Joshua Owiti (Maseno East), Rev. Dr. Simon Onyango (Southern
Nyanza), Rev. John Orina (Upper Southern Nyanza), Rev. Mark Godia (Maseno West),
Rev. Charles Onginjo (Maseno South), Rev. Dr. Emily Onyango (Bondo), and Prof.
David Kodia too of Bondo.
